National Security and Foreign Relations
Senator Duckworth devoted over twenty years of her life in service to this country in the Reserve Forces. As a former Army officer, she understands the security challenges our nation must contend with and the risks our Armed Forces face. As a Senator, she is committed to ensuring American troops have the equipment and technology they need to keep our nation safe, and to supporting policies that improve their quality of life. She is also committed to rooting out waste within the Department of Defense and opposing harmful policies that discriminate against or dishonor our nation’s warriors.
Senator Duckworth knows that Congress has an obligation to provide our troops downrange with clear guidance and legal authority for their operations and is helping lead the efforts to provide them with an updated Authorization for Use of Military Force for the war on terror. Illinois is home to Scott Air Force Base, Rock Island Arsenal and the Naval Station Great Lakes. As a member of the influential U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Duckworth is committed to advocating for these military installations to ensure they can continue to support our nation’s security and our state’s economic growth. She also believes Illinois is uniquely positioned for economic opportunity and business development with our allies and partners around the globe, and she is committed to making sure the whole world knows it. By advocating for significant investments and increased exports in Illinois with international partners, Senator Duckworth is helping strengthen economic ties, create good-paying, local jobs while ensuring the state can grow as a hub of agriculture manufacturing and technology.
A strong and robust military is a principal pillar of our nation’s power, but is only one element in securing our national security. Senator Duckworth believes one of America’s greatest strengths is our system of democratic values and constitutionally-protected freedoms and rights. As the United States continues to lead in an increasingly interconnected world, it is important that we match our military power with the promotion of our values through diplomatic means. Defending and advancing our principles abroad will help our country effectively support international allies while confronting shared adversaries and threats.
She recognizes that the national security challenges facing our country will only grow in complexity and size in the coming years. Whether it’s countering the threats posed by global terrorism, the proliferation of nuclear weapons, sharing intelligence to prevent terrorist attacks or simply working together to respond to major global challenges, effective international cooperation is more important than ever when it comes to advancing our core security interests overseas to help make Americans safer at home.

‘Unhinged’: Sen. Duckworth blasts Trump tariffs, Gaza proposal
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) is firing back at President Trump’s controversial policies, criticizing both his new tariffs on Chinese imports and his proposal to take control of the Gaza Strip.
Duckworth warned each American taxpayer will shell out $1,200 to $2000 to pay for Trump’s 10% tariffs on China, which went into effect on Tuesday. That means you can expect to pay more for things like toys, fast fashion (think Shein and Temu) and smartphones.
“You’re going to see your prices go through the roof. I am just absolutely flabbergasted that a man who ran in America First agenda is so focused on everything other than helping middle-class families around the country,” she said.
Illinois farmers and manufacturers could be hit even harder. China is expected to issue retaliatory tariffs next week, which could impact some of Illinois’ biggest industries: soybeans, pork and corn. As for manufacturing, Duckworth said supply chains are fully integrated with other countries.
“There will be issues in terms of the cost of everything will go up that we buy from overseas. Even though we make a lot of things in Illinois, a lot of times, the components, the parts, come from overseas and those parts will be much, much more expensive,” she said.
Tariffs on Chinese imports are just the start. President Trump has temporarily delayed a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico for 30 days following increased border enforcement by both countries. Trump invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to announce the sweeping tariffs on Feb. 1 in an executive order citing an economic emergency. The president justified the move by stating that Mexico, Canada, and China have not done enough to curb the ‘extraordinary’ flow of fentanyl into the United States.
‘An unhinged proposal’
During a Tuesday press meeting alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump proposed to seize the Gaza Strip and displace two million Palestinians in order to redevelop the war-torn region, into what he called a ‘riviera of the Middle East.’
“This is basically an unhinged proposal that would jeopardize the lives of our brave men and women in uniform and waste billions of taxpayer dollars,” said Duckworth.
The proposal also likely violates international law.
“Carrying out this outrageous plan would not only undermine our national security, but it would be illegal. The president doesn’t authorize have the authorization from Congress to do this,” said Duckworth.
Duckworth said sending American troops to the Middle East is not only reckless, but goes against the president’s own America First agenda.
“It would extend and commit U.S. forces to a deployment in tremendous numbers. That would be a tremendous burden on the American people and would also potentially affect and jeopardize our national security,” she said.
Instead of engaging in nation-building, Duckworth said we have bigger issues to worry about at home, like the Farm Bill, immigration reform and bird flu.
“We have real problems we need to be solving and he wants to send U.S. troops to take over a godforsaken rubble like Gaza. Seriously? Is that the best way to spend our national treasure? I don’t think so,” she said.
To block the Gaza redevelopment proposal, Duckworth said she would work across the aisle with Republicans who are opposed to foreign involvement.
“One of the things is to communicate to American people about what this entails. Again, he doesn’t have the authority to do this without authorization from Congress. So we could actually stop him and certainly many of my Republican colleagues in the past have spoke about the fact that we should not be involved in the Middle East,” she said.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt walked back some of Trump’s Gaza comments during Wednesday’s press briefing, saying Trump has “not committed” to send troops to the area.
“It’s been made very clear to the president that the United States needs to be involved in this rebuilding effort to ensure stability in the region for all people. That does not mean boots on the ground in Gaza. That does not mean American taxpayers will be funding this effort,” she said.

Duckworth to oppose Trump’s remaining Cabinet nominees over USAID moves
Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) told POLITICO on Wednesday she will oppose President Donald Trump's remaining top-level Cabinet and administration appointees over efforts to gut the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Duckworth, who serves on both the Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committee, is one of the most prominent Democratic lawmakers to call for an absolute rejection of Trump's nominees.
Harsh words: In an interview, Duckworth said Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whose nomination she supported, betrayed promises to her and other senators that he would not “go after USAID” and that he wouldn’t block humanitarian aid from getting to people in need.
"I can’t see how I can vote yes on any Trump nominees at this point because the ones that I voted on already, despite reassurances to me prior to my vote, immediately went back on their word once they were in office,” Duckworth said.
What it’ll take: Duckworth said she wants an end to the 90-day pause on foreign aid and government grants before she can support Cabinet picks.
She also wants individual nominees to answer “in the affirmative” that they would not carry out what she characterizes as “illegal or unconstitutional orders issued to them from Trump” before she’ll consider supporting them.
Finding leverage: Congressional Democrats have decried the Trump administration’s campaign against USAID as unconstitutional, but they lack much of the procedural leverage needed to pressure the White House. Still, Senate Democrats can eat up valuable floor time and slow Senate business by placing holds on nominees or blocking critical procedural votes.
Not the only one: Duckworth joins Democratic Sen. Brian Schatz of Hawaii in using nominees as a way to protest Trump’s moves against USAID. Schatz has imposed a "blanket hold" on all of Trump's State Department nominees.
Causing headaches: Duckworth said that means she’ll vote no both in committees considering nominees and on the Senate floor.
This could create more hurdles for nominees who were expected to be less controversial with Democrats, by preventing nominees from advancing unanimously. That includes ambassador to the United Nations nominee Elise Stefanik, trade representative nominee Jamieson Greer and Commerce secretary nominee Howard Lutnick.
Who’s in the crosshairs: Duckworth said she already voted against Trump’s Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins in line with this policy, despite believing they are qualified and that she could work with them on key issues. She also had been planning to vote for Lutnick but now will oppose his nomination.
Duckworth is pledging to closely scrutinize lower-level nominees, including Trump’s picks to be deputy secretaries of the State and Defense departments and the nominees to be secretaries of the Army, Navy and Air Force.

'I don't trust him': Senator shoots down Trump nominee's new scramble to save nomination
Donald Trump's controversial choice to run the Pentagon is backtracking on previous comments he made about women in combat and some senators are not buying his sudden about-face as he tries to salvage his nomination.
According to a report from Politico, Fox News personality Pete Hegseth is scrambling to disavow comments he made just a month ago, before the president-elect tapped him to be the next secretary of defense, where he bluntly stated, "I’m straight up just saying, we should not have women in combat roles.”
Already under a cloud of allegations of public drunkenness and an accusation of sexual assault, Hegseth is now reassuring lawmakers that he sees a role for women that he now characterizes as "some of our greatest warriors."
According to Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), she is not buying his overnight conversion.
The senator who lost both her legs in combat while serving in the U.S. Army, scoffed, "Trump nominees lie all the time in order to get confirmed, don’t they? So, I don’t trust him.”
Sen Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), who is likely to rubberstamp all of Trump's Cabinet nominees, admitted Hegseth's change of heart might be a matter of convenience.“I heard he was changing his tune a little bit on women in combat,” he stated before suggesting, “Sometimes you make comments that you don’t really want to stand by, sometimes, you know, when you’re not up for confirmation.”You can read more right here.Read More -
