Duckworth Statement After the Supreme Court Struck Down Trump’s Illegal Tariffs

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today issued the following statement in reaction to the Supreme Court striking down Donald Trump’s illegal tariffs in a 6-3 decision:

“Trump’s illegal tariffs were a self-inflicted economic catastrophe caused by one wannabe dictator’s greed, vanity and hunger for power. They forced millions of Americans to pay more for groceries, toys and so many more everyday essentials, squeezed small business owners and pushed farmers to make impossible decisions just to survive. His tariffs stole billions from American small businesses, farmers and consumers—and he must give that money back.

“After months of pain in American pocketbooks, this decision proves Trump hurt the middle class for nothing. It won’t put the $1,700 that the average family has already spent back in their pockets. And after losing this case with two of the three Justices he appointed voting against him, Trump just reiterated that he will find other ways to force the American people to pay even higher prices in the months ahead.

“It could not be more obvious that Trump was always lying when he promised to lower costs. He simply is not interested in doing anything but raise prices for Americans, even if it could mean circumventing the Supreme Court.”
