Duckworth, Durbin, Underwood Announce $5 Million for Plainfield’s 143rd Street Extension Project

[WASHINGTON, D.C.]  – U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Congresswoman Lauren Underwood (D-IL-14) today announced that the Village of Plainfield has been awarded $5 million in federal funding to construct the eastern extension of 143rd Street, which will help alleviate traffic and improve safety for vehicles traveling through and within the Village. The funding was awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant program.

“This federal funding to Plainfield will help relieve traffic congestion and create jobs, while making commutes easier and safer for residents,” said Duckworth. “I look forward to continue working together with Senator Durbin and Rep. Underwood to secure more wins like this and bring as many federal infrastructure dollars as possible to our great state.”

“This federal funding is welcome news for those who live in and travel through Plainfield, as it will help improve traffic flow and alleviate congestion,” said Durbin. “I’ve been proud to work with my colleagues in advocating for this infrastructure funding that will improve quality of life for Illinoisans.”

“Bringing home federal resources to help Illinois families thrive remains one of my top priorities in Congress. Since 2019, I’ve worked with Plainfield officials to advocate for federal funding to support our community’s 143rd Street extension project. Today, I’m pleased to join Senators Duckworth and Durbin to announce $5 million in grant funding for the Village of Plainfield that will help improve mobility and increase the reliability and efficiency of transportation corridors that many in our community rely on,” said Underwood. “I look forward to continuing to secure and deliver resources to our community.”

This project will extend 143rd Street to Illinois Route 126, north of Plainfield’s Central Business District, to provide better east-west movement of vehicles. The project will consist of roadway, a bridge over the DuPage River, sidewalks, a center median, street lighting, an enclosed drainage system, and redesigned intersections.
