Duckworth Condemns Trump’s Increasingly Erratic Threats to Seize Greenland
[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL)—a member of the U.S. Senate Committees on Foreign Relations (SFRC) and Armed Services (SASC)—today released the following statement as Donald Trump continues to escalate his outrageous threats to take over Greenland from NATO ally Denmark, including new tariffs on eight European allies:
“Donald Trump’s escalating and increasingly erratic threats to take Greenland by force and economic coercion are as nonsensical as they are dangerous. Not only do the Greenlandic people not want a Trump takeover, but they could not be clearer that they are eager to strengthen their partnership with the United States to achieve the security and economic goals Trump is threatening invasion to secure.
“Trump’s latest foreign distraction isn’t simply unnecessary, it is also undermining our partners’ faith in the NATO alliance, which further emboldens Russia and puts our national security at greater risk. At a time when our allies across NATO have been steadily increasing their defense spending and leadership role in Ukraine, jeopardizing this progress is particularly stupid and detrimental to our interests. If he were actually focused on making Americans safer, he would be bolstering support for NATO—not threatening to steal a NATO ally’s land by force.
“And while Americans are struggling to pay for necessities like health care and groceries thanks to Trump’s policies, he’s now threatening punitive tariffs against our allies that will jack up prices even more. It’s bad for our allies, it’s bad for our national security and it’s bad for middle-class American families who need help. Trump needs to spend less time trying to take over and run foreign lands and more time bringing costs down for the Americans he’s ignored for too long.”
