Duckworth, Durbin Visit Broadview ICE Facility to Conduct Oversight
[CHICAGO, IL] - U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today visited the grounds of the Broadview ICE processing center in their congressional oversight roles. This follows multiple requests for oversight of the facility’s conditions and the brutal tactics used by federal agents against protestors, journalists, and elected officials engaged in peaceful First Amendment activity outside the facility.
“Conducting oversight on federal agencies, facilities and actions is one of our core responsibilities as Senators,” Duckworth said. “Senator Durbin and I have now requested multiple times to visit the ICE processing facility in Broadview, but we have been unable. What do DHS and Kristi Noem have to hide? We deserve to know what’s happening inside this facility, how many people are being detained and what the conditions are for those being detained and processed. With an administration that has been eager to dehumanize and ignore due process, Congressional oversight into this facility is tremendously needed.”
“Between the deployment of Texas’s National Guard, an increased ICE presence, and reckless raids, what is happening here in Illinois is an unprecedented and unlawful abuse of power. Senator Duckworth and I have repeatedly requested to conduct oversight on the conditions inside of the Broadview ICE facility and have been unable to. What does President Trump’s Department of Homeland Security have to hide?” said Durbin. “These actions have accomplished what I believe is the President’s true intention here: spreading fear in America, especially among immigrant communities.”
As ICE has increased its presence in the Chicago area, conducting reckless immigration raids and aggressively engaging with peaceful protesters at Broadview ICE facility, Duckworth and Durbin have continued to push for oversight of the facility’s conditions and the brutal tactics used by federal agents during raids. In September, after Illinois delegation members were barred from entering Broadview, Duckworth and Durbin joined a delegation request to urge ICE Field Office Director Russell Holt to promptly schedule a meeting with congressional members. ICE officials have yet to respond.
Earlier this week, Duckworth and Durbin both spoke on the Senate floor to condemn the Trump Administration’s unprovoked and unlawful escalation of immigration enforcement in Chicago and the arrival of Texas National Guard troops.
