Duckworth, Durbin Call on Governor Rauner to Protect Illinois Families from Disastrous Impacts of GOP Tax Plan

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Dick Durbin (D-IL), along with nine of their House colleagues, penned a letter to Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner calling on him to take action to mitigate the impact of the Trump administration’s harmful tax plan, which raises federal taxes for hundreds of thousands of Illinois taxpayers. The Senators pressed the Governor to state whether he intends to support the new Federal cap on the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction as a result of the new tax law and how he plans to protect Illinois families from the tax law’s added economic burden.

“As Governor, you have a responsibility to make sure Illinois residents are not unfairly burdened by the measure that allows double taxation on our constituents,” the Senators wrote. “We hope to hear from you directly and promptly with a specific plan of action and stand ready to work with your office to mitigate the negative impacts of this law which we strongly opposed.”

Senators Duckworth and Durbin have long been outspoken about the negative effects of the GOP tax law’s cap on the SALT deduction. In October, the Senators wrote a letter to Governor Rauner requesting information on how the cap on the SALT deduction would affect Illinois's economy. They have since continued to push back against the Republican tax plan, highlighting the devastating effects the legislation has on small businesses and working families.

The following Members of Congress also signed the letter: Representatives Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Mike Quigley (D-IL), Danny Davis (D-IL), Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL), Dan Lipinski (D-IL), Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), Brad Schneider (D-IL), Cheri Bustos (D-IL) and Robin Kelly (D-IL).
