Senator Duckworth Meets with Habitat for Humanity, Highlights Importance of National Service

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) this week met with representatives of Habitat for Humanity International - a member of the AmeriCorps National Service Network - to discuss the important work Habitat is performing throughout Illinois and the importance of expanding national service opportunities for young Americans. In the meeting, Duckworth heard firsthand from an Illinoisan whose home was built by Habitat volunteers and discussed how she can support Habitat expand in the Southside of Chicago and re-open an affiliate in East St. Louis. "I have always been motivated and inspired by service to my country, both in and out of uniform," said Senator Duckworth. "It was a pleasure to meet with leaders from Habitat for Humanity, an organization that provides thousands of Illinoisans each year with the opportunity to serve their communities and their country. As a Senator, I hope to expand service opportunities for all young Americans, whether that service takes the form of teaching, urban planning, improving public health or building communities with organizations like Habitat for Humanity."

Senator Duckworth is a champion for civilian national service and an avid volunteer. She served in the Reserve Forces for 23 years and continued to serve her fellow Veterans as Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and then as Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Throughout her career, she has also made a point of volunteering with community partners at local schools, food pantries and community centers. Last year, she introduced the 21st Century American Service Act to increase service positions available through civilian national service organizations and ensure all young Americans are informed of the opportunities available to them. She plans to continue working to expand service opportunities for young Americans across the country in the Senate.
