Durbin, Duckworth Announce Federal Funding to Improve Illinoisans’ Health

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded a total of $855,328 in federal funding to Illinois research universities and nonprofit organizations to support medical research and improve healthcare treatment options.

"This funding will support cutting edge research to help reduce substance abuse and improve treatment options for patients across Illinois," said Senator Duckworth. "Senator Durbin and I will continue our work to ensure that funding like this is available to help discover new treatment options and ultimately improve the lives of patients across the state."

"This infusion of federal dollars will support important medical research and strengthen treatment options for Illinoisans, especially for those dealing with substance abuse disorders," said Senator Durbin. "I will continue working with Senator Duckworth to secure federal investments that improve health care options and keep Illinois on the cutting edge of research and development."

Under this announcement, the following projects will receive HHS funding:

• Chestnut Health Systems, Inc.: $538,957 for Recovery Management Checkup for Primary Care (RMC-PC) vs. Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Experiment
• Northwestern University: $82,371 for Promotora Intervention for Metabolic and MentalHealth (PRIME2)
• NorthShore University HealthSystem: $234,000 for A High Throughput, Human, In Vitro Model of Neuronal Stretch Injury
