Duckworth, Durbin Announce More Than $38 Million to Support Housing and Community Development in Illinois

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Dick Durbin (D-IL) today announced that cities and counties throughout Illinois have received a total of $38.6 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to support housing and community development amid the COVID-19 pandemic.  The funding was provided through the CARES Act and has been distributed by HUD’s Community Development Block Grant (CDGB) program and Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) program.

“Children and families in need across Illinois rely on investments like these – especially during this public health and economic crisis – to help improve housing conditions and reduce homelessness,” Duckworth said. “Along with Senator Durbin, I’m proud to advocate for federal funding for programs that help ensure all Illinoisans have access to the affordable housing they need to stay safe during this pandemic.”

“This federal funding gives local communities much-needed flexibility in providing housing and other supportive services for people in need,” Durbin said.  “Families and individuals who are homeless or at risk of experiencing homelessness are among our state’s most vulnerable. It’s critical that we provide additional support during this crisis. Senator Duckworth and I will continue working to provide increased federal assistance during this challenging time.”
