Duckworth Hosts Fireside Chat with Metropolitan Mayors Caucus

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today hosted a virtual fireside chat with the Metropolitan Mayors Conference to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on their communities. Participants included Hillside Mayor Joseph Tamburino, Hazel Crest Mayor Vernard Alsberry, Jr., Evanston Mayor Steve Hagerty and Metropolitan Mayors Caucus Executive Director David Bennett, and the conversation focused on what communities are looking for in a future federal relief package and how Duckworth’s office can help the Chicagoland region recover from both the economic and health impacts of the pandemic.

“Our local governments have been hit especially hard during this pandemic as communities are battling this virus on two fronts—elected officials are doing all they can to protect their fellow citizens during this public health crisis while also working to keep essential services running despite decreased revenue,” Duckworth said. “These are not easy tasks and I’m glad I was able to connect with so many Chicagoland mayors today, and I’ll keep working hard to make sure they have the assistance they need and deserve.”

The Metropolitan Mayors Caucus is a membership organization of the Chicago region’s 275 cities, towns and villages, comprising municipal leaders from Cook, Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage and Will counties.

Duckworth has been a strong supporter of providing more funding to state and local governments to help with budget shortfalls as a result of COVID-19. Earlier this year, Duckworth called for funding to local governments serving small communities in a future relief package, and called for flexibility and clarity in the distribution of relief funds to state, county and local governments.
